Online Learning Day 1/5

Please read the section on virtues in section 2.4 (particularly around page 9 or so, with the diagrams of the virtues and vices). Pick two virtues (one of which may be in the course packet - choose a second one not in there) and list the corresponding vices that come along with an excess and a lack of that virtue. Then give an example of how a person could demonstrate those two virtues and four vices. For example, while one strives to be ethical, overdoing it can lead to righteousness, lacking it leads to immorality. The ethical person might pick up their tray at lunch and take it up front. The righteous person might scold someone for not doing so, leading to the other person intentionally not taking up her/his tray in the future so as to bother the righteous person. The immoral person just leaves the tray and expects someone to pick it up. Just look at two virtues in like fashion please.

Early in section 2.6 on prayer, there is a section on spiritual inertia, towards the bottom of p.13 or top of p.14. Of the five reasons why we don't pray and participate in the sacraments in section C, which do you think is the most common reason that people don't pray. Why?

Online Learning Day 1/4

1) Reviewing guilt and shame in 2.2, give one example from history/literature/movie/a TV show where healthy guilt has helped turn someone/a character from bad to good. Then do the same where shame has had a harmful effect on someone/a character.
2) Read section 2.3. Pick one of the marks of the church (one, holy, catholic, or apostolic) and describe how it is lived out in the Church today. Be well!

Online Learning Day 1/2

America article about Pope's comments on Our Father

Please answer the following questions in your in-class writing document:
1) What is the significance of the proposed change in translation? Another way of saying it, why make that change?
2) What would the change suggest about the discussion we had before break about section 2.2 of the notes and sin?
